Meditation Instruction

Meditation is Natural

How do you know where to start and how to proceed?

Do I need an App?

Do I need a mantra?

How do I not think?!

The good new is meditation is natural, everything meditates. We allow meditation, we don't do it. (Ever watched a child or found yourself "zoning out"? That's spontaneous meditation.) And yes, allowing can be tricky when we live in a world that venerates the mind over anything else. So the idea of quieting the mind, or disconnecting from it can be challenging. But not impossible and not even difficult given a little guidance and understanding.

In meditation, when you close your eyes you are surrendering the [small] self to something bigger than you. The energy exchange leads to a blending of the [small] self with the [larger] Self, and to Oneness. This leads to being whole and complete.
The union of selves leads to wholeness.
And wholeness leads to Oneness.

Sum Faht Meditation

I teach an ancient Chinese form of meditation called Sum Faht. The name comes from the Cantonese phrase “soi sum peen fah faht,” which loosely translates to "whatever the heart desires will manifest". This speaks to the desire of the heart to connect with All That Is/Universe/Source. When the divine energy of the heart is activated and cultivated, it seeks to blend our unique expression of Source, our personal energies, with Source/Universe/All That Is.

When we are willing to face the Self with strength and equanimity we become free of the illusion of fear, in all its forms (anxiety, worry, bitterness, judgement, guilt, shame, lack, suffering, etc.) and its hold over us.

By closing our eyes and surrendering to who we are behind the personality construct, small self, we connect with the Higher Self, allowing it to work with us and guide us. We do not use mantras or other tools that engage the mind. Instead we sit in silence and allow the inner energies to guide us, helping us heal so we can grow and deepen our connection to the Higher Self and Source.

Emotions, sounds and spontaneous movements of the hands and body can manifest. Which at first seem antithetical to what most people think of as meditation. But true meditation is more than just transcending our humanness; it's being willing to surrender to what comes, what we are presented with.

We work with sitting meditation as well as a form of standing meditation we call Guided Movements. This is a form of moving meditation that allows our energies to work with our physical body, strengthening it, the mind and energy flow.

All of this opens and tunes our intuition, and our ability to work with energies in order to help others.

Sum Faht meditation is, like nature, complex but not complicated. It is essentially very simple.

Which is what we strive for; to flow, naturally.

Meditation is our work to do, no one can do it for us. Do not underestimate the power of meditation.

What Meditation Is Not

Meditation is not engaging the mind with music or creative visualizations ("guided meditation") or other stimulation.

While these things can sometimes serve as a bridge, a way to get your ass on the cushion, they are not truly surrendering to the Self and allowing it to guide you. In fact, they can keep you from experiencing the gifts and parts of your Self meditation opens for you.

Meditation is not a competition or race.

It takes time to grow and evolve. Like a garden, it's something we tend with intention, care and a great deal of patience and acceptance. There is no end, it's always changing and growing. That's why it's called a practice and cultivation. We practice, honing our skill and understanding while cultivating the ever-evolving, ever-expanding garden of the Self.

Meditation is not about seeking.

It is about allowing. Listening. Surrendering to the Higher Self and flowing with it. We come to meditation with an open heart, willing and curious but not insistent. Magical and seemingly miraculous things can happen when we let go of the need or desire for anything to happen.

A Word About Kundalini and Spontaneous Spiritual Awakenings

There is a lot of conversation on social media and in spiritual circles, about "activating the Kundalini", the source of energy situated at the base of the spine. Much of it is misinformation, misinterpretation, misunderstanding, misguided and even potentially dangerous.

There are reasons why monks and yogis meditate and cultivate for decades before going through a very specific process of activating the Kundalini. It takes time, focus and dedication to strengthen the mind and the body to be able to handle the powerful transformational energy and expanded awareness that comes with awakening Kundalini.

Activating Kundalini before you are ready is like forcing the entire Pacific Ocean through a garden hose. The stress on the system is staggering. So much raw energy and awareness running through an unprepared body and mind is excruciatingly painful on every level conceivable.  Often landing people in emergency rooms and psychiatric wards with scary (and inaccurate) diagnoses like a psychotic break, schizophrenia, manic bipolar, generalized psychosis, dissociative disorders, etc. People can spend the rest of their lives sedated and medicated to the eyes for conditions they don't have, struggling to regain their sanity and stability.  Doctors play whack-a-mole with a revolving door of physical symptoms trying to get people comfortable in their bodies again.

Even for the initiated, who have experienced and knowledgeable guidance and support, it can take years to fully integrate the energies and awareness released in a Kundalini awakening.

This is a very informative video about the realities of Kundalini awakening.

Q & A

What's the difference between a Kundalini awakening and a spiritual awakening?

A spiritual awakening is much more gradual and subtle than a Kundalini awakening. It often begins with a profound awareness that you are not your body, it's just an earth space suit and the smallest part of you. Your intuition and compassion expand and deepen. You may feel disconnected from others and seek solitude and nature. The texture of reality becomes different in ways you can't quite explain. You may become aware of energies, entities and presences you hadn't noticed before. It's an opening, a beginning.

A Kundalini awakening utterly shatters your physical, emotional and psychic awareness of your world. Along with the physical sensation of pure electricity lighting up every fiber of your being (for better and worse), you may see and hear things others don't and experience things that are beyond description. Not properly prepared, you will feel like you are loosing your mind.

Can a Kundalini or spiritual awakening happen spontaneously?

Yes (they seem to be occurring more and more frequently). They can happen as a result of a trauma or shock (physical or emotional), a blow to the head, following plant medicine or other psychedelic experience, doing yoga (which most people forget is a spiritual practice not just groovy exercise) or meditation.

Can meditation help?

Yes. Sometimes it can intensify some of the symptoms and experiences (not fun). But with proper guidance and support it can and does help immensely.

Can I help you stabilize and integrate Kundalini and spontaneous spiritual awakenings?

Yes. And if what you need is outside of my ability, I have resources to refer you to.

Meditation helps us know who we are. Meditation nurtures self as you surrender to the Self. Trust what you feel, trust your Self more.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've tried and tried to meditate and I swear I must be the only human in the world who just can't do it. My brain never shuts up! What makes you and your approach different?

That's not an uncommon experience, especially in the western world. We've become a culture of human doings that we hardly know how to just be. In fact, it's generally frowned upon to sit and do nothing! So it's not a surprise everything in us, especially our brains, rebel when we try to sit quietly, close our eyes and disconnect from the outside world.

The good news is meditation is natural. Everything meditates, even you when you "zone out" and "go offline" for a few minutes, you're spontaneously meditating. We don't do meditation as much as we allow meditation. Getting the brain to play along is just a matter of reframing how we think about a few things and strengthening new muscles and skills.  If all else fails, I've got a few tricks up my sleeve to help you get there.

I've been meditating for a while. I never really had a teacher, I just kind of figured it out on my own by reading and watching videos. Lately I've been experiencing things that are kind of scaring me. Sometimes my arms will move around in weird ways and sometimes it feels like there's an actual presence behind or around me.

Everything you're experiencing is very normal and nothing to be afraid of.

When we sit in meditation we're turning our focus inward. Not to the mind, but to what's is behind the thoughts, the sensations behind the physicality. You might become aware of different sensations, tingling, swaying, swirling, etc. Sometimes they are so strong your body is moved by them. As weird as it seems, it's all very natural, it's just your energies working with you, with your physical body, to help you. Always remember YOU are in charge. If the movement ever becomes too much or too uncomfortable, all you have to do is internally say, "stop" and it will.

At different points in our cultivation, it isn't unusual to become aware of what seems like someone or somethings standing next to or behind us. You've reached a point where the mind is quiet enough that you're able to feel the larger part of the Self, the Inner/Higher/Soul Self, that is always there - has always been there with you.

I've heard that negative "entities" can attach to you if you're too open while you're meditating and I should protecting myself from them. All of which freaks me out. Anyway, now I'm afraid to meditate.

There is a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding about "negative entities", meditation and protection. Lets take this in pieces.

Everything is  energy, frequency and vibration. Not every frequency is accessible at the same time, you have to be in the vibrational vicinity to be able to experience what is there. Think about it like a radio signal or a streaming channel, you can only hear/experience what you're tuned into. What you're focused on is what you get.

When we meditate with sincerity of heart, even when we are just learning, we are in a very pure, very high and coherent vibrational state. Anything not in that vibrational vicinity does not have access to your field. It can't. Its straight physics.

But you can grant unwanted energies access with your own  beliefs, thoughts and fears . Which break the coherence of your own vibration, making it accessible to the very things you say you do not want. Make no mistake, you are the one granting the interaction, they cannot "push in" unless you allow it with your thoughts, fears, beliefs and attention.

If you are worried about "negative entities", that is what you will experience. If you feel the need to protect yourself, then you will experience something you need protecting from. It is that simple.

Ultimately and most important, there is NOTHING to fear. In meditation or anywhere else.

Testimonials

I'd been trying to meditate for longer than I care to admit. I never really understood why it seemed so easy for some people and why everyone says it's so important - especially since I couldn't do it! Your explanations were so clear and straight forward. You showed me what you were talking about so I could  see and feel it. You continue to help me understand a lot and get out of my own way.

~Larry

A friend suggested I work with you when I mentioned the sales in my retail shop were dropping, we just weren't getting the traffic we used to. To be honest, I was more than a little skeptical that moving things around would do anything. Boy was I wrong! Within days even our internet sales picked up, customers who haven't been in in years showed up out of the blue and virtually every sale has been than the average for the last quarter. You quite honestly saved my business.

~T.A.

I've been meditating for a while. (I never really had a teacher, I just kind of figured it out on my own by reading and watching videos.) I didn't realize what I didn't know! You're right, listening to guided meditations can hardly be compared to what you've opened up to me in a seated, silent meditation practice. Its a completely different and more satisfying experience.

Chris ~

My husband and I had become roommates, we were just going through the motions of life together. It felt like every bit of fun and passion had evaporated between us. Now all of that feels like a lifetime ago! (You weren't kidding when you said you always start in the bedroom for a reason.) I don't really know how to talk about how different it is now and how quickly things changed. Maybe the best part is he thought the whole thing was woo-woo silliness. Yeah. He's your biggest fan now!
